BESS Application: Telecommunication networks & stations

Telecommunications Networks and Stations: Guaranteed Operation During Power Outages with BESS

Telecommunications networks are essential infrastructure, especially during emergencies, extreme weather events, or power outages. Antennas, base stations, communication nodes, and transmission equipment need to maintain service even when the mains power fails. A BESS provides a local energy reserve and reinforces the operational continuity of these sites.

In the event of an outage, the battery delivers power to critical loads and reduces or prevents the immediate loss of communications. Autonomy can be adapted to the site’s consumption, criticality level, estimated intervention time, and the availability of other power sources, such as photovoltaic panels or generators.

Automatic Response to Incidents

The system continuously monitors the network and the state of charge. When it detects an anomaly, it activates the pre-programmed backup strategy and keeps selected equipment powered. When the mains power is restored, it manages reconnection and battery recharging.

In remote locations, remote monitoring is essential. The operator can monitor alarms, temperature, estimated runtime, cycles, and module status, reducing travel and facilitating preventative maintenance.

Benefits for telecommunications operators

· Service continuity: keeps critical nodes operational during power outages.

· Scalable runtime: capacity can be adapted to micro-outages, prolonged incidents, or technical personnel arrival times.

· Fast and automatic response: reduces the risk of service interruption during transitions.

· Reduced fuel dependence: can reduce generator operating hours and associated logistics.

· Renewable integration: at photovoltaic sites, it stores energy for use when solar production is unavailable.

· Remote management: facilitates the monitoring of a distributed network of stations and the early detection of problems.

Hybrid BESS with photovoltaics and generator

At isolated stations or those with weak grids, the combination of BESS and photovoltaics can reduce fuel consumption and increase runtime. The battery absorbs solar variability and maintains a stable power supply. If a generator is available, the system can start it only when needed and operate it at a more efficient range.

This architecture also provides resilience against simultaneous incidents: a prolonged grid outage, low solar production, or difficult site access. The EMS decides which source to use and can apply power-saving modes to extend the service life of priority functions.

Design for demanding environments

Telecommunications stations can be exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, humidity, vandalism, or difficult access. The solution must include enclosure, cooling, security, redundant communications, and ease of maintenance. It must also consider battery degradation and guarantee a minimum reserve, preventing other cost-effective applications from compromising the backup power supply.

At Vector Energy, we design scalable BESS solutions for telecommunications networks and sites, with intelligent control and remote monitoring. Energy storage allows for enhanced service continuity, integration of renewable energy, and increased autonomy during power outages, contributing to more secure and resilient communications.
